Grew up on Point Danger

Two locals, one beach, and a fresh call every morning.

Swell started in 2015 with two Torquay locals who grew up surfing Point Danger. It runs the way they learned: small groups, soft boards, and lessons on the beach right in front of the shop.

No bus to a far-off break. Before each lesson the coaches read the ocean and pick the friendliest bit of sand and small waves for learning that day.

The day's call

Every lesson
  • SwellSize and shape of the waves. Small and friendly is the goal.
  • WindWhich way it's blowing changes which stretch of sand is kindest.
  • TideSome banks work on the low, some on the high.
  • SpaceRoom to learn, well clear of everyone else in the water.

Then we pick the spot. You just turn up and suit up.

Eight per coach. Never more.

Small groups mean more waves each, more help when you need it, and a coach watching your pop-up instead of a crowd.

Safety, handled

The serious bit, done quietly.

You're here for the fun part, so we keep the serious part simple. Here's what sits behind every lesson.

  1. Accredited coachesEvery coach holds a Surfing Australia accreditation.
  2. Surf rescue qualifiedEvery coach also holds a surf rescue qualification.
  3. Soft boards for learningBig, foamy soft-tops that float you onto your feet and are kind when you fall off.
  4. Spot picked by conditionsWe choose where to surf each day by the swell, wind and tide.
