Our story · Byron Bay, since 2019

Left out in the sun, on purpose.

Saltwater Swim Co. is a small label from Byron Bay making swimwear for women and men from recycled nylon, in colours that look like they have already had a summer.

  1. A surf instructor's idea

Jess was a surf instructor before she was anything else. Most of her working life was spent waist deep, in swimwear that was either built for posing or built for laps, and rarely for both.

In 2019 she started Saltwater Swim Co. to make the pieces she wanted: minimal cuts that stay put in the white water, look good on the sand and do not shout about it.

  2. Recycled nylon, said once

Every swimsuit, bikini, trunk and boardshort is made from recycled nylon. It is the same stretch, the same hand feel and the same hard-wearing fabric you expect from good swimwear, made from material that has had a life before.

That is the whole sermon. We would rather you swam in it.

  3. Made in Sydney, in small runs

Our pieces are cut and sewn by a family-owned manufacturer in Sydney, a few hours down the coast from where they are designed. Small runs mean we make what we need and keep an eye on every seam.

It also means colours come and go. If you see one you love, that is probably the sign.

Five colourways

Colours that look like they've had a summer

Every colour is named after something on the walk down to the water. The strips show each one at full strength, then bleached out, the way everything ends up in Byron.

  1. Kelp01The dark olive of the weed line after a southerly.
  2. Driftwood02The grey of an old fence post at the top of the beach track.
  3. Saltbush03The silver green of the dune scrub, dusty with salt.
  4. Ochre04The burnt orange of the cliffs when the sun gets low.
  5. Tidepool05The deep green blue of the water just past the rocks.
